Why should I use Matomo or Piwik PRO instead of Google Analytics?+
If, for legal or internal reasons, tracking data cannot or should not be routed through U.S. servers, or if you want to retain full control over your own database, Matomo and Piwik PRO are the established alternatives.
What is the difference between Matomo and Piwik PRO?+
Both prioritize data protection and, by default, collect only first-party data. Matomo is open-source and can be self-hosted, which means you have full control over storage and infrastructure. Piwik PRO also offers on-premises or cloud hosting, a built-in consent manager, as well as heatmaps and session replays.
Can I import my historical Google Analytics data?+
There is a plugin for Matomo that imports historical Universal Analytics data. Whether and how data from GA4 can be imported depends on the specific situation; we’ll clarify this during the needs assessment.
Is Matomo really GDPR-compliant?+
Matomo is designed to be operated in compliance with the GDPR, particularly when self-hosted within the EU. However, actual compliance always depends on your specific configuration and your privacy policy—not solely on the tool itself.
